35W bridge collapse Minneapolis, MN USA

It was one year ago -- August 1st, 2007 -- just after 6 PM when the impossible happened. I was safe at home. We were painting our garage and had 89.3 The Current turned up loud on the garage stereo and heard Mary Lucia announce that "a bridge on 35W had collapsed". It wasn't until a few minutes later that we found out that it wasn't just "a bridge", it was the 35W bridge in Minneapolis spanning the Mississippi River. In just under a year it has been rebuilt and will open for traffic in less than two months. It shouldn't have happened but the fact that it did was a wake-up call. It put Minnesota back in the national spotlight but for all the wrong reasons.

Local blogger Aaron Landry has an extensive collection of 35W bridge collapse photos on his Flickr stream as shared to him by a friend living adjacent to the bridge.
