Water Exhibit at the Science Museum

| Friday, January 30, 2009

from flickr user daylapt
The photographer says: The Science Museum of Minnesota is having a Water Exhibit show from today, January 30, 2009 to April 26, 2009. They contacted me and asked to use this photo in the exhibit. This photo along with around 40 others will be flashed on the wall of the exhibit. Cool huh ? Here is the link to the show.

Mill Ruins Park in downtown Minneapolis is an area which I am unfamiliar with but the close-up shot of the dilapidated buildings against the almost antique looking sky make for a photo worthy of greater attention.

Their heads bobble

| Tuesday, January 27, 2009

from flickr user Typos in the Key of E
Do these rather 60s-looking bobbleheads represent any particular players? It's cool to see how something from a bygone era of the Twin Cities and the state of Minnesota looks when compared to something from today. These bits of history make me look forward to a Sunday afternoon Minnesota Twins game at Target Field in 2010.

Winter Carnival 2009: Pig driving tractor

|

from flickr user Steve Ferree
I can't quite tell if the gentleman on his knees is still in the process of carving this snow sculpture at St. Paul, Minnesota's Winter Carnival or if he's working on another on in the forground but I must say that the image of a pig driving a tractor carved in snow is at least worthy of a laugh.

Winter Carnival - Snow Sculptures

|

from flickr user kayepants
Winter in St. Paul means Winter Carnival time and with a cold winter means more cool outdoor displays to gawk at. This year's collection of snow sculptures is particularly nice due to the fact that we have the two necessary ingredients: snow and cold temperatures. This one seems to be a Viking opera, or not.

US Pond Hockey Championships

|

from flickr user Black Coffee
The U.S. Pond Hockey Championship took place this past weekend and the fact that much of the weekend's temperatures were below zero simply reinforces the fact that Minnesotans (and others) love hockey enough not only to play it on a frozen lake but to sit and watch a game outdoors as well.

Moon Glow

A glowing and vibrant photo from last summer's Rochesterfest Moonglow event in Rochester, Minnesota. The Re/Max balloon is not a surprise to me but the Roscoe's Root Beer & Ribs is. It's also worthy of some of your dining dollars should you ever find yourself in Rochester.

Winter in Woodbury

from flickr user tango 28
A second take on yesterday's hoarfrost in the Twin Cities area. The photos, in this case, don't quite do justice to what I saw during my commute or outside my home or office.

| Thursday, January 22, 2009

from flickr user beedazzlegifts
A decent, not stunning, capture of the hoarfrost covering the trees across Minnesota this morning. I'm guessing it's in relation to the melting snow and the resulting fog which leaves the trees nicely iced. If anyone has better photos of this morning's landscape or knows of them, point me in their direction or join the MinnPics Flickr pool and add them there!

Barn cupola

| Wednesday, January 21, 2009

The photographer says: The cupola on the barn out at the farm. I love the detail work on the top. It is intricate, which surprises me since it is so hard to see that with it 30+ feet in the air.

One of the more recent additions to the MinnPics pool on Flickr, this John Deere combine crawling through a golden soybean field near Rochester, Minnesota this past fall. I talmost makes one forget about the two feet of snow blanketing the landscape.

A Bit On The Chilly Side

| Monday, January 19, 2009

from flickr user Monkey River Town
The photographer says: It was -20F two days ago. I had to be out in that weather, but not to worry, I am prepared. Thing is, no matter how bundled up you are, there are hazards to being out in that sort of temperature. You wear a scarf to protect your skin, but then your breath stays closer to your face. In this sort of weather your breath freezes to your eye lashes and anything else it comes in contact with. And since I had to walk a couple blocks there was plenty of time to ice up.

Tons of great bands played at concerts heavily promoted by L.A.'s Indie 103.1. And while this doesn't have a damned thing to do with Minnesota I feel that it's alright to deviate this one time because I love good music and with it Indie 103.1 gone I'll miss what was a great source for my music needs. Keep checking back for more Indie 103.1 photos.

If you look at this photo long enough, you might just end up dizzy but I chose this photo to showcase because it takes a different angle on capturing an urban street scene. The reflection on the window is pristine and the angle used only adds to the head trippiness of the photo.

If you have something interesting that you have photographed in Minnesota, consider joining the MinnPics pool on Flickr. Your photo could very well end up being showcased right here!

Go Betty Go vocalist Emily Wynne-Hughes

| Wednesday, January 14, 2009

from flickr user rodic66
I was first turned on to pop-punk outfit Go Betty Go right her in Minneapolis via Mary Lucia on 89.3 The Current. The cheerleader-esque riot-inducing rock instantly stuck with me and I was at least mildly hooked.

That's why I am at least a bit disheartened that lead singer Emily Wynne-Hughes showed up on last nights season premiere of American Idol on Fox. At least she did so in punk style by rocking the Heart tune Barracuda (as best as you can sans band). Sadly enough for Go Betty Go fans, she made it to Hollywood, dawg so the band may be down one lead singer.

Hopefully this all boils down to some sort of publicity stunt.

Yes, Minnesotans do thrive during the winter months and as this photo taken near Detroit Lakes, Minnesota shows, entire icehouse cities appear on the frozen lakes.

Where grapes go during winter

|

from flickr user katbaro
Taken on Monday, this photographer gets to the bottom of the most important question ever. What happens to grapes? The answer that most people would think of is that they are consumed or turn to raisins. Unless of course the grapes are in Minnesota. Then they suffer under a blanket of snow.

Fullest Moon of 2009

| Monday, January 12, 2009

from flickr user mplsphoto
A moon so big it almost looks like it wants to crush the bridge. That's because it's the biggest moon of 2009 and it's wonderfully photographed over St. Paul, Minnesota last evening and full of stunning dark blues, oranges and reds.

Dashing through the snow

|

from flickr user pmarkham
I have that I have nearly driven off the road before staring at a small pasture full of miniature horses and that, in part, is why I'm featuring this action photo of a mini running through a snow-covered pasture. I'm a fan of the golden hue of the trees in the foreground and how the blanket of bluish-white snow contrasts nicely. If you are curious, the photos was taken near Cosmos, Minnesota and the user is a member of the MinnPics Flickr Pool!

| Wednesday, January 7, 2009

Take punk rock and mix in a horns and you have the recipe for So-Cal rockers Reel Big Fish. It's been too many years since I saw the band in concert but the group pulls in to Minneapolis for a Saturday night show at the Epic Center at 100 N. 5th St. If you like bands along the lines of Goldfinger, Less Than Jake or Flogging Molly, these guys are definitely in your wheelhouse.

Even toys like the snow

|

from flickr user SM DOOM
These toys stuck in the Minnesota snow make me think back to some sort of crazy dream I may have had while all hopped up on NyQuil with a 102 degree fever. Whatever the case, the color drenched subjects of this photograph bring some vibrancy to a stark Minnesota winter.

Going green

|

If I'm not mistaken, this downtown Minneapolis photo was taken at the Guthrie and it showcases a rather unique view of the downtown skyline with a haunting green hue cast on it. It's a great way to alter the typical "here's the skyline" shot.

New Year's Eve in Red Wing

That's one cold llama

I've featured llamas before and I believe it was even the same llama farm north of Rochester, Minnesota but this is different because you can now see how rugged these animals are that they can adapt to our rather harsh winters.
