Baby's first swing

| Tuesday, June 30, 2009

from flickr user bsorenson

My daughter is seen here Saturday just minutes after I figured out how to adjust her new swing. I've never seen her happier.

Stormy sunset

| Monday, June 29, 2009

from flickr user Dan Anderson
It was stormy over downtown Minneapolis last night (Friday) and that made for an intense sky. My only suggestion with this photo is to tweak it somewhat to eliminate the blue casting on the buildings and if this is an HDR photo, don't overuse that technique. It has its place but some times it's nice to see the natural photo in all its glory.

This weekend marked the annual Pride Parade in Minneapolis. The turnout for this is huge among all segments of the population and the photos tell the story quite well.

The thrill of victory

| Sunday, June 28, 2009

from flickr user bsorenson
The 2009 Henderson Sauerkraut Days kraut eating champion, Norman "The Inhaler" Malecha, is from Belle Plaine, MN and was already the winner of the sauerkraut eating contest during that city's German Days celebration. He inhaled the two pounds of kraut with a time of 2:19. Kudos to you with the iron gut.

The agony of defeat

|

from flickr user bsorenson
"Big" Bob Graham, a contestant in the 2009 Henderson sauerkraut eating contest (one of the events during Henderson, Minnesota's annual Sauerkraut Days celebration), is seen here with kraut falling from his mouth after another contestant had won. It has to be a bitter pill to swallow to know that eating just under two pounds of kraut was all for nothing.

Rochester at sunset

| Thursday, June 25, 2009

from flickr user DigitalObserver
A cool twist on the typical sunset photo takes us to downtown Rochester, Minnesota today. Using the waters of the Zumbro River in the foreground to capture a shoreline reflection frames the photo nicely with the Rochester Public Utilities plant in the background. The most striking part has to be the flood wall on the right side of the photo bathed in the orange from the sunset.

Ideal Diner

| Wednesday, June 24, 2009

from flickr user Bjorn1101
The photographer says: If you want a greasy breakfast in Minneapolis, this is the place.

I chose this photo today because I actually like signage. Well, good signage - not the uninspired crap with misplaced (and incorrect) apostrophes and font choices of only Arial, Brush Script and Comic Sans. This sign is old, unique and thoughtfully designed. Very nice photo.

Piggy Blues helping in Austin, MN

| Tuesday, June 23, 2009

from flickr user The Salvation Army
In the aftermath of last week's tornado that hit Austin, Minnesota, the local business community is doing their part by feeding clean-up volunteers and lending a hand in the recovery. Piggy Blues Bar-B-Que, located on North Main Street in Austin, MN, is seen here delivering some of their tasty Kansas City-style BBQ. If you are ever in town (after clean-up is complete) stop by the Main Street restaurant, enjoy a meal and say "hi" to Josh and Andrea.

Will the Dome Dog live on for Twins fans?

|

from flickr user angelrove
This youngster seen here inside the confines of the HHH Metrodome is devouring a culinary delicacy known around Minnesota as a (footlong) Dome Dog. Will there be a counterpart of the Dome Dog when the Minnesota Twins move to the outdoor Target Field next season? Whatever the case, get to the Metrodome, catch a Minnesota Twins game and gobble down a Dome Dog.

Old Cedar Avenue Bridge

| Monday, June 15, 2009

The bridge is closed because their is no money for repair, making it the missing link in a bike/hiking trail across the Minnesota River. Part of the decking has been removed -- perhaps to dissuade exploration?

WCCO reporter and Good Question guy, Jason DeRusha gets all "inside television" and explains: This camera is in our main news studio. We kept the old large Sony box, but inside is the same small HD control that you see in the pictures of the Newsroom studio cameras.

Miesville Burger

|

from flickr user Bill.Roehl
South metro blogger Bill Roehl recently made his way to the rural Dakota County outpost of Miesville for a Lazy Lightning reader meet-up where burgers were on the menu. This one is obviously hand-pattied and seems to be complete with plenty of fixings but in true bar fashion the lighting is obviously sub-par and the buns appear to be straight out of a Super-Valu package - not that there's anything wrong with that because the bun is just a wheat-based pair of tongs.

Grass fire in Andover

from flickr user StArHaCkT
Taken Sunday, this helicopter is busy dousing the flames of a grass fire in the northern metro suburb of Andover. The fire burned hundreds of acres with little damage to homes in the area. Yesterday's fire truly shows how much we need rain here in the Twin Cities metro.
