The Minnesota Fringe Festival is open for business and runs through August 9. The above photo is from a rehearsal of Sideways Stories from Wayside School. The festival features performances scattered throughout the city for the next week. See the full schedule here.
The Weekend: Fringe Festival
The weekend: Warped Tour

from flickr user Sabrina Dani
Bad Religion, Bouncing Souls, Less Than Jake, local favorites P.O.S., Senses Fail and literally forty other bands hit Shakopee's Canterbury Park Sunday as the Van's Warped Tour rolls in to the southwest Minneapolis suburb for the second straight year. See the whole lineup here. If you plan on attending (or dropping your tween off) leave early because the Canterbury Rd. exit off of U.S. 169 CANNOT handle even the normal Canterbury Park traffic, much less anything for a concert event with 10,000 attendees. If you're coming from the north, consider Flying Cloud Dr. (old U.S. 212) from Eden Prairie to the MN 101 crossing in downtown Shakopee and east on 101 to Canterbury Rd.
The bus graveyard

from flickr user yearofthewhitedog
This photo is stunning both in the choice of subject and composition. I wonder how long busses stay here after they have stopped being used.
It's DeRusha Day

from flickr user PerfectPorridge.com
I usually keep things classy here and, for the most part, WCCO reporter/Good Question guy fits the definition of classy. The reason I decided on this photo was because of Jason DeRusha's Good Question tonight on WCCO channel 4. How does one get a "day" named in their honor? The sarcastic responses have been bouncing back and forth today on Twitter but with DeRusha knowingly posing for a photo while wearing Zubaz his chances for today (or any day) being DeRusha Day anywhere outside of the local blogosphere are seriously diminished. There. I hope I got his attention. Jason DeRusha.
A fairly good time in Rochester

from flickr user C Z Sr
The Olmsted County Fair, held thru August 2, has taken ahold of Rochester and with rides like this it's probably keeping teens wandering about the fairgrounds and asking for money from their parents. If you're in the Olmsted County area, check it out as it's one of the better fairs in the area.
Storm At Sunset

from flickr user glness
A rising thunderstorm builds near Rollag, Minnesota as the sun is setting. Jul 26, 2009.
Proud Little Church

from flickr user emma leishman
After many years of disregard, this tiny church still stands near Kettle River, Minnesota. A beautiful find on an inadvertant trip through rural Minnesota.
Minneopa State Park

from flickr user AjRango
A warm sunset at Minneopa State Park in Mankato, MN
Adrian Peterson

from flickr user Paul Bangasser
Adrian Peterson, running back of the Minnesota Vikings, is still the face of the team in the wake of Brett Favre announcing yesterday that he plans to stay retired - unless a team comes calling later in the season. The Vikings head to Mankato, MN to room at Minnesota State University's Gage Hall for training camp this week.
She thinks my tractor's historic

from flickr user Dancing Bohunk
This tractor, originally sold by the Thieman Tractor Company of Albert City, Iowa as a kit to be assembled, looks like a total nightmare to drive. Aside from the obvious lack of comfort, I don't see a starter button. Was this a hand-crank model or is there another, less obvious way of starting this beast? This, among others, was on display this past weekend at the Little Bighouse Antique Power Show in Hastings, MN.
Czech out Montgomery

from flickr user GSankary
The Montgomery (Minnesota) Kolacky Days royalty performing on stage. I wonder if the dresses are new each year or are they re-used from year to year as part of the Czech heritage of the southern Scott County/northern LeSueur County area. Kolacky Days was held this past weekend in Montgomery.
Getting on the train

from flickr user Wild at Heart
The lighting of this photo makes me think it could have been taken in an eastern European country - maybe the bygone Czechoslovokia - but the train's markings are distinctly Minnesota. Although I highly doubt anyone taking their bicycle on the Hiawatha Line train is going all the way to the Mall of America, stranger things have happened. This line, stretcing from downtown Minneapolis to Bloomington's Mall of America will be joined in the near future by the University Line connecting downtown St. Paul to Minneapolis and by the Northstar commuter line running from Big Lake to Target Field in downtown west. And today's news brings talk of a lobbying effort for a rail line (light/commuter) heading west along I-394 to Wayzata and onward to Willmar.
Wabasha Eagle Center Fountain

from flickr user Jill Moulton Photography
Wabasha, Minnesota is a sleeply little city on the shores of the Mississippi River. It's known for its eagle population and for being the setting of the movie "Grumpy Old Men". It just screams Minnesota!
Light at the end of the... er... Road?

from flickr user Jaron Roberts
This isn't a bad example of nighttime photography and being as this photo is in Flickr's Freedom for Beginners pool, I'll cut the guy some slack. It could actually be the look, bathed in orange light, that the photographer was gunning for. After thinking it through, it's a good photo in its own right and I hope to see more from this Flickrite.
Crystal Bay, Minnesota

from flickr user minomap
Along Minnesotas North Shore, Tettagouche State Park.
City House

from flickr user tboard
The grain elevator and sack house fixed up a bit. Taken in downtown St. Paul, this photo captures vibrant contrast between the blue sky and stark, white clouds.
Wine in Woodbury

from flickr user kenzaffke
The subject of this photo, a wine store in Woodbury, Minnesota, is nothing spectacular. What makes this photo stand out is the fact that it captures the atmosphere of the store. From the outside it may very well be part of a faceless strip mall but from the inside it is warm, upscale, rich and inviting. It's nearly of the level I'd expect to see in a lifestyle magazine's special wine issue.
Twins stadium progress - at night

from TwinsBallpark2010.com
With less than half of a season remaining in the Metrodome, progress on Target Field, the new home of the Minnesota Twins, is coming along nicely. The bulk of the field's sod is installed and the view of the Minnespolis skyline at night is impressive. Hopefully tickets are easy to come by when my little girl gets old enough to sit through a full nine innings.
But it's just Shopko

from flickr user Sponge 1987
I've seen some fairly ugly Shopko stores in my day. They used to all be ugly. But now the Green Baw, Wi-based retailer has stepped things up. Phased out in the past few years was the horrible Crillee-based logo. But things have changed. The logo is new as of 2007 as is the store's interior and exterior color scheme and this store in particular, in North Branch, MN, is actually appealing and welcoming. Almost makes me miss being a Shopko shopper.
Afterglow Fire

from flickr user imagination overdrive
Obviously taken near sunset with heavy clouds or a storm approaching, this lake makes for a stunning contrast between relative sunshine and thick cloud cover.
Beautiful Jackie

from flickr user pmarkham
Jackie, our full-sized donkey, enjoying a nice fresh salad in the big summer pasture. Jackie has finally shed out her winter coat and is now wearing her short summer coat. She looks stunning with that short summer coat.
Hot cars, hot women

from flickr user mnhotrod
I don't know which looks better in red - the 1970 Chevelle SS or 2009 Miss Car Craft Summer Nationals.
Car Craft Summer Nationals

from flickr user mnhotrod
The 2009 Pontiac G8, covered in a killer coat of orange paint, rolls through the Minnesota State Fairgrounds in Falcon Heights during the 2009 Car Craft Summer Nationals. It seems that at the end of Pontiac's life they finally produced a fine combination of practicality and muscle car.

Rise of the Machines

from flickr user aeranthes
The utter destruction of U.S. Highway 169 (aka Minnesota Avenue) in the heart of St. Peter, Minnesota is now almost complete. Interesting detours are in place, and the creation of a greater incarnation of Highway 169 in St Peter is is planned...to be finished before Thanksgiving.
The Last Flash

from flickr user boscbo
This is a perfect silhouette from a perfect sunset. Taken in Mahtomedi, MN, this surreal farm setting only reveals trees, a couple silos and a cupola from atop a barn.
A swampy gal

from flickr user Shotbox
Someone has a sense of humor. When I first found this photo taken in Akeley, MN, I thought that - based on the thumbnail - there was some crazy hippie-woman on a floatie in an algae-covered swamp. Thankfully it was just a creatively placed mannequin on an improvised floating chaise lounge. And as an added bonus, a turtle has found the creation a comfortable place to rest.
Beached

from flickr user DigitalObserver
Art in any form is subjective. Plenty of people will look at this photo and say "Wow, a boat" in a tone that drips with sarcasm. Others will stop and analyze the detail of the photo. They'll notice how the subject of the photo was framed. They'll pay particular attention to the use of light in the photo. I first noticed this photo because the boat's shadows blend in seamlessly with the dark water while the top of the boat when photographed is blown out with the bright sunlight striking it. It all works to make a damn nice photo.
Every Whch Way

from flickr user MadArtistPhoto
The interchange of I-35W and I-94 in Minneapolis. My experiences have always been that it never seems this intimidating but I've never seem it from this particular perspective.
Swinging in the clouds

from flickr user MississyLee
This photo is just too cool. It seems as if the little girl is actually swinging up in to the clouds.
The truck that time forgot

from flickr user djsime
A well-used shed, attached to a barn, is the home of this old Ford truck. Can anyone out there nail down the yar of the truck and confirm that it is a Ford? I'm guessing it is somewhere in the 1960s.
Ewwwwwwww

from flickr user Photojournals
This candid photo, taken on Lake Minnetonka, captures how many women truly react to their husband's fishing hobby.
Whew!
Hopefully at least a few people out there were able to stomach this weeklong showcase of photos predating the existence of MinnPics. I loved digging through literally tens of thousands of photos from the past five or so years to choose the 32 showcased in the past week. Now it's back to present times here at MinnPics. Enjoy!
35W collapse

from flickr user spiderleggreen
View of collapsed bridge and rescue operations. This is the view that wasn't all over the national news. This is where Twin Cities area police and first responders were staged as they searched teh Mississippi River for survivors and wreckage in the hours and days following the collapse of the Interstate 35W bridge in Minneapolis.

Thanks for those of you who stuck around through this week-long recap of sorts of the world of Minnesota photos predating the existence of MinnPics. It's been one year since the launch and I hope people stick around for the adventure known as the second year. If you missed anything, scroll down or click back and view the dozens of photos featured in this sort of best of the best from pre-MinnPics days.
Minneapolis is a winter wonderland

Crop Balance

from flickr user lookin glass
I love intense colors. I'm assuming that the vibrant blues and greens were captured with the help of a polarizer filter but whatever the case, this photo makes Minnesota's countryside look very much alive during the summer months.
Summer view

Going through the archives I found this photo taken this past summer at Oxbow Park.

Misty Lane

from flickr user lookin glass
The title says it all. A misty, golden morning sets a soothing tone and while it's great to look at, it's also the type of morning that makes you want to sleep in.

Go Figure

from flickr user Jim's outside photos
In my two visits to Duluth and the must-see area of Canal Park, I've always wondered what, exactly, this concrete structure is that sits not far off shore. The calm waters make this setting that much more surreal.

Drip, drip, drip

A perfect capture of a reflection on a drop of water. This is what macro photography done at a high speed is all about.
