Lanely tree in a field

| Wednesday, March 31, 2010

from flickr user heinz57sauce
This stark photo, complimented by a moody sky, makes me think this photo was taken in November instead of last Friday (March 26) in Woodbury, MN.

Target Field. Metropolitan Deck

| Tuesday, March 30, 2010

from flickr user [the] Printer
The strong lines of the steel along the glass of Target Field only serve to enhance the awesome perspective. This photo does a great job of making a relatively tiny baseball stadium seem almost massive.

Vintage postcard - Hibbing, MN Woolworth

| Monday, March 29, 2010

from flickr user Christian Montone
A vintage postcard depicting the grand opening of the Woolworth store in Hibbing, MN. Judging by the mostly vacant parking lot, Woolworth may not have been a hit even back in its heyday.

Highway 220

from flickr user theskyhawker
This rather desolate gravel road near Grand Forks, North Dakota seems like an extended, narrow peninsula with either side of the road flanked by flood water from the nearby Red River.

The future is in St. Paul

| Thursday, March 25, 2010

from flickr user H-dub
This photo taken from under the Wabasha Street bridge in St. Paul, MN looks amazing. It has almost a futuristic feel - maybe somethng from the movie "Ultraviolet" - to it with the glowing colors. It comes close to feeling like a painting.

Harriet Island...or lake???

| Wednesday, March 24, 2010

from flickr user HOARYHEAD
I set out today to begin veering away from the endless stream of flood photos but this photo of a rather submerged Harriet Island in St. Paul is too good to pass up.

Covered Bridge

from flickr user -Chad Johnson
A picturesque covered bridge obviously off the beaten path near Zumbrota, MN (Rochester area). I love the sign posted stating a penalty of $10 for driving across the bridge faster than a walking pace.

Minnesota River 2010 Flood

|

Taken in Henderson, MN this past Sunday, this photo shows how truly high the Minnesota River flood waters are with water trying to rush under the Minnesota Highway 19 bridge hitting the steel girders beneath the bridge deck and more than a few trees and logs being swept along with the swift current. The small river valley town sits mostly shut off with flood wall gates blocking two unpassable entrances in to the town and another barricaded and under water.

Inundated

| Tuesday, March 23, 2010

from flickr user k.landerholm
The Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge alongside the Minnesota River between Eagan and Bloomington appears to be rather inaccessible due to the 2010 flood spanning the entire length of the Minnesota River and spilling in to the Mississippi River. Some areas have crested but are expected to remain high for the foreseeable future.

Saint Paul

The wide expanse of flood waters spilling over the banks of the Mississippi River in downtown St. Paul actually look cool at night with the city lights reflecting on the rushing water.

St Anthony Falls from the Stone Arch Bridge in Minneapolis. All I have to say is wow, that's a lot of water.

Mississippi River in Minneapolis

The water is at 11 feet over flood stage and will rise to close to 20 feet in the next couple of days.

Minnesota River flooding

| Thursday, March 18, 2010

The flood waters of the Minnesota River at Henderson, MN have forced the closure of Minnesota Highway 19 - the eastern route in and out of the city. The flooded portion of the highway lies a few thousand feet east of the river bridge.

Minnesota River flooding

Minnesota Highway 19 east of Henderson is closed at the Minnesota River due to flooding. The barricades here are chained and cabled to keep drivers from crossing through the flood waters.

The ice field

| Wednesday, March 17, 2010

from flickr user miles1322
Taken Monday, this photo of the Missippi River in Minneapolis shows both high water and a river full of numerous large chungs of ice. Both of these are headed downstream and predicted to wreak havoc in parts of St. Paul and points downstream.

Natural disasters suck: Fargo-Moorhead flooding

|

from flickr user IvanClow
The photographer says: so i dont know how much ill be able to upload this week and next week because our city has to get ready for a possibly bad flood. this is what they had to do last year in the neighborhood next to mine. if youre on the wrong side of this dike *the left side* well, you're pretty much screwed. thankfully last year none of the sandbag dikes broke, but who knows what will happen this year. These big clay dikes are put up to protect the rest of the city in case the sandbag dikes were to break.

the river level is supposed to crest at around the same height this year, so all of this will probably go up again.

Fargo could flood again

The Cannon River at Northfield, MN

|

from flickr user thedabble
River levels are high in nearly every stream in southern Minnesota and the Cannon River, traversing downtown Northfield, MN, is no exception and seems almost a lock to flood in the near future. Notice the bridge with pedestrians stopped on it - it's almost as if people have never seen high water before.

Early Morning Metrodome

| Tuesday, March 16, 2010

from flickr user Minus Manhattan
This morning's rain makes for a rather empty downtown Minneapolsi outside of the Metrodome. It will seem weird after nearly 30 years to not see the Minnesota Twins play in the sterile and uncomfortable dome.

These three trees

from flickr user boscbo
A starkly beautiful photo from Lake Elmo, MN of three trees which have seen better days surrounded by the departing ice of one of Minnesota's 10,000-plus lakes.

Lots of People on the Plaza

| Monday, March 15, 2010

from flickr user Icedavis
The rainy Saturday pictured above wasn't jsut any Saturday, it was the Saturday that 2010 Minnesota Twins tickets officially went on sale to the general public and judging by the throngs of people on the plaza at Target Field in downtown Minneapolis, sales were brisk. The Minnesota Twins play their first home game at Target Field APril 12th at 3:10 PM versus Boston.

Midwest Nocturne

| Friday, March 12, 2010

from flickr user orangedot777
A nighttime photo from lovely Faribault, Minnesota of what I believe is the Highway 60 bridge. This bridge lies on the edge of downtown Faribault and crosses the Cannon River. I find this photo appealing because it speaks about the foggy, damp and dreary week we've had.

Looking west on Washington Avenue S.E. in front of Coffman Memorial Union at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, December 11, 1952.

What really caught my eye was the presence of streetcars. Too bad they were dismantled in favor of buses.

Where is this water tower?

|

from flickr user keefus 27
I have no clue as to the specific location of this rather ornate water tower but I've never personally come across it in my travels. The photographer has it in a set labeled Minneapolis but that's about as specific as me saying I live on Earth. Location please!

Cascade River Frozen Waterfall

| Monday, March 8, 2010

from flickr user dtredinnick13
If you were to see this photo taken out of context it could easily be mistaken as a bubbly cascade of laundry soap-filled water. In fact, that take on this photo would make for a nice description if the photographer had written one. I am a fan of bizarre descriptions for any type of photo.

Winter Wonderland

A frosty Minnesota morning makes this tree-shaded road seem even more like a snow-encased tunnel.

Twilight on the prairie

| Thursday, March 4, 2010

from flickr user istval
This photo of the somewhat famous Kasota Prairie north of Mankato, MN is stunning because of its starkness. Even during the winter months the prairie seems alive but this captures the eerily silent side of the grassland which once covered a large portion of Minnesota.

Tug boat locale found!

|

from flickr user edgerton23
Yesterday I featured a photo of a Tug Boat identified only as residing on Minnesota's North Shore. I assumed this to mean that it was somewhere in Duluth. Asking the question of Twitter, follower justacoolcat pointed out its location to be in Grand Marais - which I have never visited - and unearthed the above photo of the very same tug boat. Ah, the power of social networking!

Where is this tugboat?

This tugboat which may or may not be the inspiration for the children's book "Scuffy The Tugboat" resides somewhere on Minnesota's North Shore based on the photographer's tags. I'll go ahead and assume that it's in Duluth but in my visits I've never seen it. Where oh where is this tugboat at?
