How is it that just by being in black and white that this photo instantly conveys a certain grittiness and urban atmosphere? If I were to take a photo of a liquor store in a suburban environment would it convey those feelings?
Whatever the case, Chicago Lake Liquors in Minneapolis looks very urban and gritty in this black and white night time photo.
Chicago & Lake

A trio of sailboats chillin' on Lake Calhoun this morning.
Canterbury Park

from flickr user b.tormanen
Through some off-camera wizardry, this photo of horse racing at Shakopee's Canterbury Park has a nostalgic feel to it. Rather fitting being that the race track is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.
Insert plant A in to pothole B

from flickr user bikini sleepshirt
This awesome photo is the best example yet that I've seen of urban gardening. It is also a far more economical and green (literally) way to fill a pothole. Plus growing Marigolds is basically idiot-proof so they make the perfect option for planting in potholes everywhere.
Twin Cities Pride 2010

from flickr user twincities.metromix
Taken during Saturday's Minneapolis Pride Parade, the colorful outfits are what make this otherwise standard posed group photo a cut above the rest. The harsh sunlight of mid-day is nicely diffused by the green parasol.

A simple display during this year's Pride Parade on Hennepin Avenue in Minneapolis.
Lightning Storm - Lake Calhoun

Taken Saturday, June 26 from West Calhoun overlooking Lake Calhoun in Minneapolis.
F-22 Dedication Pass

from flickr user Chris L360
Taken Saturday during St. Cloud, Minnesota's airshow, this F-22 is captured literally splitting the air it's passing through. Awesome photo!
Boom Lighthouse and Ferry

from flickr user AlexNoriega
Some fabulous blue hour photography showcasing Boom Island in Minneapolis.
Blue Skies of Rural Minnesota

from flickr user crossn81
I don't condone photography while driving but when the result is this unique - snowing both what's ahead and behind you - go for it. This is America - the wide open freeways of the midwest.

Lightning Dance

from flickr user imagination overdrive
A dramatic photo of the lightning last night over Albert Lea, Minnesota's Fountain Lake as a tornado - one of dozens to hit Minnesota yesterday and one of nine to strike southern Minnesota's Freeborn County - passed to the north of the city. Yesterday's tornadoes killed three Minnesotans - one of who was killed on a farm west of Albert Lea in rural Freeborn County. Storms make for striking photographs but when tornadoes hit Minnesota it's never a good day.
Mammatus clouds

from flickr user hedrinbc
After last night's storms rolled through, the sky turned all sorts of colors and was full of these mammatus clouds across many parts of the metro. These clouds are harmless and actually signal the passing of severe storms like those which caused damage across much of Minnesota yeaterday.
Willie Walleye

from flickr user Georges Aerts
Baudette, MN is today's stop on the tour of Minnesota's fondness for large roadside attractions. Nothing, though, is more Minnesotan than a Walleye so this big guy gets a pass.
Sunfish Lake Reveals Its Past

from flickr user John Pie
Fog envelopes Sunfish Lake near Lake Elmo on a cool and damp June evening. The lake, a pasture and potato farm until the 1940s, reveals its past as several years of drought expose a 70-year-old fence line.
Equal Exchange banana people

from flickr user massdistraction
I'm not even going to pretend that I know why three bicyclists would be wearing giant banana costumes but based on the tags it has somethng to do with the new bike sharing experiement in Minneapolis coined Nice Ride MN but it would be even more intriguing to me if this photo was just random weirdness. That's what I like.
Hennepin Dusk

from flickr user stt1119
The photographer says: The beautiful Hennepin Ave. Bridge spanning the Mississippi River leads you into the Minneapolis Skyline as a blue dusk sets in. This particular shot was taken from Nicollet Island looking West. I hand blended two exposures in photoshop. One at 30 seconds and one at 5 seconds both shot at F/22. I used the 30 second exposure as a base to smooth out the water and get nice star patterns on the bridge lights and the 5 second exposure to control the lighting of the buildings.
Polyphemus moth

from flickr user CampbellRobert45
Moths have always interested me. I don't particularly approve of them being in my house ever since I had a drawer full of underwear chewed to bits as a child but they are impressive to look at - especially the huge ones. I always wonder why it is that moths exist. Do they, like butterflies, pollinate flowers and feast on nectar or are their actions more on the nefarious side?

Sunset

from flickr user ellioy
A stunning rural Minnesota sunset is captured here with the sun's rays peeking in to the right side of this photo. Take not of the spectacular depth of field of this photos. Very well done.
MinnPics is almost two years old...
If you've followed MinnPics for any part of its nearly two year history, you'll know that I scour around 100 Flickr pools daily as well as the MinnPics pool on Flickr. I'd love to have every photo come from the MinnPics pool but I also love variety. A milestone, though, was achieved today as the MinnPics Flickr pool welcomed its 100th member. Apparently there are at least 100 photo enthusiasts who like having their work exposed to a wider but still niche audience.
On July 8th, the MinnPics blog turns a whopping two years old. If it were human it would still be crapping itself but babbling wildly. As a goal, I'd like to see another 100 members join the MinnPics Flickr pool to add to the variety and volume of photos I know people want to have showcased. So tell a friend, drop a note on Twitter or if you're already a Flickr member join the MinnPics pool and add some photos to it. In the end you'll be making MinnPics a better blog!
Attack of the Clones

from flickr user Bjorn1101
The photographer says:
Nice Ride MN pay stations queued up for installation near the Sabo Bridge in south Minneapolis. Nice Ride will launch the biggest bike sharing program in the U.S. on June 10, 2010.
After taking this photo, I was approached by a woman who seemed very concerned.
"Excuse me, can I help you?"
"No."
"What are you doing?"
"Photographing these objects."
"Who are you with?"
"No one. I think it's pretty obvious that I'm alone."
"Are you with this company?"
"No."
"Well, I don't know if they'd be comfortable with you taking pictures."
"They're in plain view."
"Well, I'm going to see what they have to say."

Twilight Merge

from flickr user John Pie
A superb example of a long exposure taken just after sunset. In the very top of the photo a Flickr user pointed out the streak of strobe lights used by planes as they approach Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. An unintentional inclusion that makes the photo that much more cool to analyze.
Falling for You

from flickr user Jaron Roberts
The photographer says: Sami and I went out to Minneopa falls near Mankato, MN and I ended up just messing around with my shutter speed and got this photo. it was an amazing time out there! If you have time and are in the area I would definitely suggest checking out this state park. One bad thing is that the water is contaminated and you should not go in it because it is VERY bad for your body. It is beautiful though :) this is the first smaller waterwall.
Soundset 2010 - Atmosphere

from flickr user All You See
The mind and voice behind Rhymesayers Entertainment, Atmosphere, is seen here as the sun casts a warm glow on the Soundset stage at Shakopee's Canterbury Park. As teh Soundset website proclaims, an incredible crowd showed up for Sunday's festival.
Soundset 2010 - Method Man

from flickr user All You See
Rapper Method Man (formerly of the Wu Tang Clan) showed up last Sunday for the annual hip-hop festival Soundset in Shakopee. Soundset is sponsored by Rhymesayers Entertainment and was held at the festival grounds at Canterbury Park.
Red-spotted Purple - Limenitis arthemis astyanax

from flickr user cledry
I'm about as far from a botanist as people come but I don know that seeing a butterfly such as this red-spotted purple fella is a sure sign that summer has arrived in Minnesota.
Bride and bridesmaids in fountain

from flickr user Camelot Photography Minnesota
This wedding party looks far more fun and energized than that of the wedding party I was a part of this weekend. Having photographed weddings myself I can say that this is every photographer's dream - a fun bunch of people willing to do what it takes to make great, fun photos!
